On September 15, 2004, the Maine Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, Health, and Wellness, along with Governor John Baldacci and his executive staff, launched a pedometer project entitled "Maine in Motion."  This 12 week program is designed to help increase the level of physical activity in Maine people and will use pedometers and participant guides to assist Mainers in getting more physical activity each day be tracking their steps and setting a daily goal.

The September 15th kick-off marked the beginning of the pilot phase of the project.  Currently, 16 sites are participating in the pilot project and include Dirigo Pines Retirement Home, Orono; Governor's Restaurant, Waterville; University of Maine Development Office, Orono; United Kingfield Bank, Kingfield; United States Post Office, Kingfield; HealthReach Network, Augusta; Maine Department of Agriculture; Hannaford Supermarkets in Gardiner and Augusta; Madison Middle School, Madison; TC Hamlin School, Randolph; Northeastern Log Homes, Kenduskeag; Medical Care Development, Augusta; Trails for Area Rangeley Coalition, Rangeley; AARP; and Governor Baldacci and his executive staff.

Research has shown that pedometer use promotes increased activity toward better health.  Increased activity is a key element in obesity prevention and treatment.  In 2002, more than half of Maine adults (59%) were considered overweight or obese, the highest rank in New England.

The kick-off took place at the Kennebec River Rail Trail connector at Capitol Park in Augusta with over 300 supporters and participants taking part.
